A basic guide if the idea is completely new to you!

Business awards are undeniably growing in popularity. But I frequently find people asking what they are and why they matter. If you’re wondering what exactly a business award is, and what all the hype is about, I’ve got answers.

So, what exactly is a business award?

A business award is an official and impartial way of establishing your business’s credibility and trust.

There are different categories designed to recognise excellence in how you run your business. Categories might include innovation, leadership, sustainability, growth, contributing to the economy, employee engagement, customer service and even kindness!

Typically run by industry groups, peak bodies, publications and business communities, they range from super basic to extremely rigorous in their assessment processes.

What’s involved in entering business awards?

All programs are completely different in what they require from entrants. From simple multiple choice questionnaires, to submission of premium content such as videos and digital publications, awards program assessments vary greatly.

Some have multiple stages, some just have a single stage.

Some require interviews, some don’t.

Some are free to enter, some require payment.

Some require you to be nominated by an individual outside your business. Some allow you to self-nominate.

Why do business awards matter?

If you want your business to be perceived as trustworthy and an authority in your space (and who doesn’t want that?!) then business awards are definitely for you.

In a post-COVID world where new businesses are popping up every week, and every market is becoming saturated, you NEED to be visible.

You need to be perceived as credible and trustworthy. When your customers are deciding who they want to do business with, an award-winning business is always an easy choice.

Equally, award-winning businesses attract the best talent. Who doesn’t want to work for an award-winning business?

Who should enter business awards?

Every business! Even if you’re not ready, the process of entering is extremely beneficial.

You’ll learn so much about your business just by entering. I guarantee you’ll come out the other side far more knowledgeable about your business.

Of course if you’re just getting started, it’s best to start with smaller, simpler programs because it really is a learning experience.

Examples of business awards

In Australia, there are hundreds of programs across multiple industries, locations, markets and disciplines.

There are local, regional, state based and national award programs. There are awards for organisations, and awards for individuals.

Some of the more well known programs include the Local Business Awards, the Australian Business AwardsMy Business Awards, awards run by chambers of commerce, and the Ausmumpreneur Awards. The pinnacle of business awards in Australia is the multi-stage Telstra Best of Business Awards
